Record Review: blog.TINE:::MySpace Mayhem Vol. 1

Various Artists – blog.TINE:::MySpaceMayhem Volume 1, (.2007)

And here we go ------->> MySpace Stream Hits:

“Mirage Matador” by Milles Monarque [stream]

If you’ve been paying attention to this blog (thank and good for you!), you know I’ve been geeked out on this Montreal francophone band since I stumbled across “L’Arme D’eau”. Like that tune, this tune has a simmering dramatic flair, a gorgeous swell of melody, an old world feel (yes, there is harpsichord), and a giant chorus that builds. This tune it’s the second time around it gets bigger and more unbridled! – pop songwriting glory!

“Not What It Seems” by Anything After [stream]

This year I’ve heard more bands paying homage to the glories of Pyschocandy-era The Jesus & Mary Chain and early-90s shoegazer. Anything After (a trio from Downey, CA) lay down a superbly catchy slab of noise pop with slinky-minimalist-lead-guitar and high-frequency-trebley-feedback-rhythm-guitar and pow-pow-muffled-Velvets-drumming. The melody is absolutely reckless half Robert Pollard/half a million other indie rockers and the songwriting economical. The opening line is executed with absolute perfection, “Don’t you/hate it, when I say I’m right/Don’t you/like it, when I say I’m wrong …”

“Sound Of Your Name” by Le Concorde [stream]

Unbelievable how synth-pop can be so damn addictive. Le Concorde is Chicago dude Stephen Becker and this track opens with every damn cheesy new wave synth pop trick, but when the verse starts this is classic third-to-fourth-wave power pop – think, think think! Yes, discerning music listener, Teenage Fanclub. The melody is just classic, the hooks are aplenty, and the song is tremendous.

“A Perfect Day” by Eiffel Tower [stream]

Languid pretty pop marks this tune. The verses chug along, giving a sense of boredom, daily grind resignation. The change around the minute-and-a-half mark is nearly startling, but majorly refreshing taking the song to another place.

“Jennys On The Stereo” by Career Club [stream]

Cazart Brooklyn! What the hell is this? Straight up rocking hard lo-fi power pop domination. Yo, hipster! The chorus slays! That’s how they play it up around there.

“1983” by Cleo’s Apartment [stream]

Des Motherfucking Moines, Iowa! In early 2007, I saw these guys open for Dosh when I was in DSM for work. Serious turntablist fader flipping, smarmy bass lines, spitting beats and moog melodies with a subtle of subtlest hints of microhouse.
